Gum Grafting

Receding gums can appear gradually, and sometimes without warning. You might begin to notice more of your teeth showing, then increased sensitivity, or even subtle changes in your smile. If your gums need restoration, that’s where gum grafting comes in.

What Is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a common procedure used to treat gum recession. When your gum tissue wears away or pulls back, it can expose the roots of your teeth. This exposure may lead to greater sensitivity, a higher risk of decay, and an uneven gum line. Gum grafting protects these vulnerable areas and helps restore the natural look of your smile.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend different types of grafting techniques. These can include connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, pedicle grafts, ridge augmentation, ridge preservation, or sinus lifts. Each approach is designed to strengthen and rebuild the soft tissue around your teeth—or to prepare your mouth for a future restoration, like dental implants.

Why Is Gum Grafting Important?

Healthy gums do more than hold your teeth in place. They protect against bacteria, support your bite, and help keep your smile looking its best. When gum tissue starts to recede, it can leave teeth vulnerable to health issues—from decay, to shifting, and even potential bone loss.

By choosing gum grafting, you’re taking a proactive step toward long-term oral health. This procedure can:

  • Cover and protect exposed tooth roots
  • Prevent further gum recession or bone loss
  • Restore the natural contour of your smile
  • Create a stable base for dental implants or other restorations

It’s not just about the look of your smile. It’s about comfort, function, and keeping your teeth healthy for years to come.

Types of Gum Grafting Procedures

The right grafting technique depends on your individual anatomy and treatment goals. At your consultation, we’ll walk you through your options in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

Here are a few of the most common approaches:

  1. Connective Tissue Grafts
This technique uses tissue from beneath the surface of the roof of your mouth and is ideal for covering exposed roots and treating more significant gum loss.
  2. Free Gingival Grafts
Using tissue from the top layer of your palate, this method is best for patients who need to thicken thin gum tissue.
  3. Pedicle Grafts
Instead of harvesting tissue from a different part of your mouth, we use gum tissue from near the affected tooth. This option works well when there’s enough healthy tissue nearby.
  4. Ridge Augmentation and Preservation
These techniques reshape or maintain the bone and gum tissue after tooth loss or extraction. They’re especially helpful in preparing for dental implants or improving facial aesthetics.
  5. Sinus Lift

When you need more bone volume in the upper jaw—particularly around the molars—a sinus lift raises the sinus floor and adds bone to support implants.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Gum grafting is a straightforward outpatient procedure, and we’re here to make the process smooth and simple. During your initial consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your gums and overall oral health. We’ll discuss your symptoms, goals, and the grafting method that’s best for you.

On the day of the procedure, we’ll use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. The graft tissue—either from your mouth or a donor source—is carefully placed and secured in position. The area will then begin to heal naturally over the next couple of weeks.

While recovery times vary, most patients return to normal activities within a few days. We’ll provide clear instructions to help ensure a successful recovery process.

The Benefits of Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is about more than protecting your teeth—it’s about restoring your confidence. Many patients report a noticeable difference in both comfort and appearance after healing.

This treatment offers:

  • Protection from further gum and bone loss
  • A more balanced, attractive smile
  • Better foundation for future dental implants
  • Relief from tooth sensitivity
  • Improved oral hygiene access

If you’ve been dealing with gum recession or planning for a restorative treatment like implants, gum grafting may be an important first step.
