Taking the time to prepare for surgery is one of the best ways to have a smooth experience, as well as support your recovery. Here are some guidelines to help you get ready for your procedure.
Scheduling and Appointments
Once your surgery is scheduled, we’ll confirm the date with you and provide a specific arrival time. Most patients are asked to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early, so you can get settled in, and we can go over any final details.
If anything changes with your schedule—or if you’re feeling unwell in the days leading up to your appointment—please give us a call. You’ll find our office hours and phone number at the bottom of this page.
Health and Medication
Before surgery, we’ll want to know your full medical history, including any current health conditions, allergies, or past experiences with sedation. If anything changes between your consultation and your surgery date, let us know.
Your doctor will give you specific instructions when it comes to your medications. Certain medications may need to be paused before surgery—particularly blood thinners like aspirin or supplements that affect clotting. For medications you should take (such as blood pressure pills), we’ll give you clear instructions. In most cases, they can be taken with a small sip of water.
Please don’t make changes to your medications on your own—check with us first. Your safety is our top priority.
Fasting Before Surgery
If you’re having sedation or general anesthesia, it’s essential to fast for at least 8 hours before your procedure. This includes water—so once we give you your cutoff time, please be sure to stick to it.
Depending on your procedure and overall health, we may let you have clear liquids (like water or apple juice) up to two hours before surgery. If that’s the case, we’ll walk you through the details ahead of time.
Please skip alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours before your appointment. If you can go longer, even better—these can affect your anesthesia and slow down healing.
And if you have diabetes or any other condition that impacts when or how you eat, we’ll give you specific instructions.
Getting Ready: Day-of Clothing and Hygiene
Please brush your teeth the morning of your procedure, but don’t swallow any water. Avoid using mouthwash unless directed. Skip makeup, dark nail polish, contact lenses, jewelry, and any strong fragrances. Dress comfortably, we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes with sleeves that roll up easily. Closed-toe shoes only, please—no sandals or heels.
Transportation and Support
It’s essential that you have a responsible adult accompany you to the office. This person will need to stay in our office during the procedure and drive you home afterward. This isn’t just about getting you home—it’s about keeping you safe and supported as the sedation wears off.
You should not drive or operate any machinery for at least 24 hours after receiving anesthesia. We also recommend having someone stay with you for the rest of the day. Even if you’re feeling okay, your body is still recovering.
Final Checklist: What to Bring and Expect
Before you leave the house, double-check that you have:
- A valid photo ID and insurance card
- Completed your patient forms (or submit them online via our portal)
- A trusted adult to drive you home
Please let us know right away if you’ve developed a cold, sore throat, stomach bug, or anything unusual. We can adjust your appointment as needed.
