Sedation Options

At Santa Barbara Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, your comfort matters just as much as the care you receive. No matter what type of care you need, we offer a range of sedation options designed to put you at ease and enhance your treatment experience.

Why Sedation Might Be Recommended

If the thought of oral surgery makes you a little bit uneasy, you’re not alone. Sedation helps create a smooth experience so you can relax and focus on healing.

Sedation may also be recommended for longer or more complex procedures, or for patients with special medical needs. We’re here to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible all throughout treatment.

Your Sedation Options

At our practice, we’re happy to offer multiple levels of sedation so your care can be personalized to your level of comfort. Here are the different options we provide:

  1. Local Anesthesia is used to numb a specific area of the mouth. You’ll be awake and alert, but you won’t feel pain at the site. This is typically used for simple, quick procedures.
  2. Nitrous Oxide Sedation—also known as laughing gas—is a light, fast-acting option that helps you feel relaxed during treatment. It wears off quickly after your visit, so you can return to your day with minimal downtime.
  3. Oral Sedation involves taking medication before your appointment to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm. You’ll feel drowsy, and many patients don’t remember much of the procedure afterward. It’s a great middle-ground solution for moderate dental anxiety.
  4. IV Sedation is our most requested option for patients seeking a deeper level of relaxation—and we’ll walk you through that in more detail below.

A Closer Look at IV Sedation

IV sedation is a powerful, yet gentle, way to help you feel at ease during your procedure. The medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream to allow for fast and reliable results. You’ll remain conscious but deeply relaxed—often in a twilight state where time passes quickly and memories are fuzzy or completely gone.

This type of sedation is ideal for patients who:

  • Have moderate to severe dental anxiety
  • Need a longer or more involved surgical procedure
  • Prefer not to be aware of the treatment as it’s happening

One of the biggest benefits of IV sedation is control. Because we administer it in-office, your oral surgeon can adjust the level of sedation in real time. That means more flexibility for you, and smoother care throughout your visit.

During your procedure, we’ll monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure continuously. Our team is highly trained and equipped to respond to any need, so you’re in steady hands from start to finish.

Safety and Preparation for Sedation

Your safety is always our top priority. Before your appointment, we’ll meet with you to review your medical history, current medications, and any special concerns. This helps us choose the safest and most effective sedation option for you.

If you’re receiving IV sedation or oral sedation, you’ll need to follow a few simple instructions, including fasting before your procedure and arranging for someone to drive you home afterward. We’ll explain everything clearly, so you know what to expect.

During your procedure, we’ll monitor your vitals closely and make sure you’re fully comfortable before, during, and after the surgery. Most patients wake up feeling rested and ready to recover.

How to Choose the Right Sedation Option

When it comes to choosing the right level of sedation, we like to have an open conversation with you about your health history, your treatment, and your preferences. We’ll take time during your consultation to talk through your options.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to feeling comfortable. Our goal is to help you make an informed, confident choice that leads to the best experience possible.
