Oral Pathology Services

Not every bump or sore in your mouth is cause for concern—but some of them can be. That’s where we come in. At Santa Barbara Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we’re here to help you understand what’s going on and take action early if needed.

What Conditions Does Oral Pathology Address?

Oral pathology is the area of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the mouth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Some of these are harmless. Others may need prompt attention to prevent more serious problems down the road.

If you’ve noticed a change in the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue, lips, or throat, it could be best to get a professional evaluation. We often see patients for the following:

  • Suspicious sores or patches that don’t heal
  • Unusual lumps, bumps, or swelling
  • Chronic irritation or thickened tissue
  • Changes in tissue color or texture

Common conditions include oral cancer (such as squamous cell carcinoma), cysts, tumors, and salivary gland disorders. We also diagnose infections, autoimmune issues, and mucosal diseases like lichen planus. Children, teens, and adults can all benefit from a professional evaluation when something doesn’t seem right.

When to See an Oral Pathologist

The earlier we catch a problem, the easier it is to treat. That’s why paying attention to small changes can make a big difference. Even if you’re not in pain, it can still be a good idea to see a specialist if something seems unusual.

You should contact us if you experience:

  • A sore that hasn’t healed after two weeks
  • Pain, swelling, or tenderness in the mouth or jaw
  • A lump or thickened area in your cheek, lips, or neck
  • Trouble swallowing or chewing
  • Unexplained bleeding or changes in voice

These symptoms don’t always mean something serious—but they do mean it’s time to get checked.

What to Expect During an Oral Pathology Consultation

During your visit, we’ll take the time to understand your health history, symptoms, and concerns. We’ll do a thorough exam and may use advanced imaging like 3D scans or X-rays to evaluate the area.

If we see something that needs further testing, we might recommend a biopsy—removing a small tissue sample for lab analysis. This is a quick, safe procedure done right in our office. Once we have results, we’ll walk you through your treatment options and make sure you feel confident and clear on next steps.

Diagnostic Tools and Technologies

We use leading-edge diagnostic tools to give you fast, accurate answers. This includes:

  • CBCT and CT Scans: Provide a clear and detailed look at hard and soft tissue structures
  • Biopsies: Incisional (small sample) or excisional (entire lesion removed) depending on what’s needed
  • Pathology Lab Testing: Expert analysis to confirm diagnosis and guide your treatment plan

Our goal is always to act early, minimize uncertainty, and create the best possible path forward for your care.

Treatment Options for Oral Pathology Conditions

Every condition is unique. Some require only monitoring or medication, while others may need surgical intervention. If a growth, lesion, or cyst needs to be removed, we’ll perform the procedure with precision and care.

Depending on your diagnosis, we may remove the cyst, tumor, or abnormal tissue in our surgical suite. It’s possible that we may also prescribe medications for infections or autoimmune conditions. And if ongoing care is needed, we’ll work closely with your dentist, ENT, or oncologist.

No matter what your situation looks like, we’ll build a personalized treatment plan to support you.
